The Area

Kenya at a Glance
UNICEF estimates there are presently 25 million orphaned children in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Kenya alone there are currently 2 million orphans out of the 12 million children.

Maai Mahiu
The majority of Naomi's Village's orphans come from Maai Mahiu, Kenya. Maai Mahiu is located on the major highway from Uganda through Kenya, known as the HIV Highway. Maai Mahiu has no real sustainable industry other than trucking and prostitution. Poverty is stifling and a transient male population, disease, and poverty leave many children hungry, homeless and orphaned.

The Slums
The orphans not from Maai Mahiu, come from the the slums in Nairobi, Kenya where families live in corrugated iron shacks measuring no more than 3m X 3m. Large families are crammed into this tiny space to survive. The people are landless. Some were pushed from their rural homes by tribal and land clashes. Others are refugees and many know no other life. They all have one thing in common in that they are essentially squatters and can be evicted at any given moment.
